|| श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता ||
The twelfth chapter, 'Bhakti Yoga', is the heart of the Gita — the shortest chapter (only 20 verses) yet the sweetest. Arjuna asks: who is better — those who worship the personal (saguna) God, or those who worship the formless (nirguna) Brahman? Krishna replies that both reach the goal, but the path of the formless is harder for embodied beings; loving devotion to the personal form is therefore easier and superior. He then gives a beautiful ladder of practice — fix your mind on Me; if you cannot, take up practice; if not that, work for Me; and if even that fails, renounce the fruit of action. The closing verses (13-20) are the timeless portrait of the 'dear devotee' — free from hatred, friendly, compassionate, without ego, even in joy and sorrow, content and steady of mind.
Arjuna said: Of those devotees who, ever steadfast, worship You, and those who worship the imperishable, the unmanifest — which are the better knowers of yoga?
The Blessed Lord said: Those who fix their mind on Me and, ever steadfast, worship Me with supreme faith — them I regard as the most perfect in yoga.
But those who worship the Imperishable — the indefinable, unmanifest, all-pervading, inconceivable, unchanging, immovable and eternal — restraining the senses, even-minded everywhere and devoted to the welfare of all beings, they too attain Me. Yet greater is the toil of those whose minds are set on the unmanifest, for the unmanifest goal is hard for the embodied to reach.
But those who, dedicating all actions to Me, intent on Me, worship Me with undivided devotion, meditating on Me — for them, O Partha, whose minds are absorbed in Me, I quickly become the deliverer from the ocean of death and rebirth.
Fix your mind on Me alone, place your intellect in Me; thereafter you shall dwell in Me alone — of this there is no doubt.
If you cannot fix your mind steadily on Me, then seek to reach Me through the yoga of practice, O Dhananjaya.
If you are unable even to practise, be intent on working for Me; even by doing actions for My sake, you will attain perfection.
But if you are unable to do even this, then, taking refuge in Me, self-controlled, renounce the fruit of all actions.
Better than mere practice is knowledge; better than knowledge is meditation; and better than meditation is the renunciation of the fruit of action — for from such renunciation peace immediately follows.

One who hates no being, is friendly and compassionate, free from possessiveness and ego, even in pain and pleasure, forgiving; ever content, self-controlled, firm in resolve, with mind and intellect dedicated to Me — such a devotee is dear to Me.

One who is free from wants, pure, capable, indifferent, untroubled, and who has given up all selfish undertakings — such a devotee is dear to Me.

Alike toward foe and friend, in honour and dishonour, in cold and heat, in pleasure and pain, free from attachment; regarding blame and praise as equal, restrained in speech, content with whatever comes, without fixed abode, steady in mind — such a devotee is dear to Me.
But those devotees who, full of faith and holding Me as the supreme goal, follow this nectar of dharma as declared — they are exceedingly dear to Me.
