|| श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता ||
The thirteenth chapter, 'Kshetra-Kshetrajna Vibhaga Yoga', is a deep exposition of the path of knowledge. Krishna calls the body the 'field' and the Self that knows it the 'knower of the field', and declares that understanding the distinction between the two is true knowledge. He lists twenty marks of 'knowledge' — humility, non-violence, patience, service of the teacher, dispassion, undivided devotion and more. He then describes the 'knowable' supreme Brahman — all-pervading, beyond the senses, free from qualities yet the support of all. Finally he explains the difference between nature and spirit: nature is the doer, the Self the unattached witness; one who sees the Self as non-doer and the Lord equally in all attains the supreme goal.

The Blessed Lord said: This body, O son of Kunti, is called the field; and the one who knows it, the wise call the knower of the field.
Know Me also, O Bharata, as the knower of the field in all fields; the knowledge of the field and its knower — that I hold to be true knowledge.
What that field is, of what nature, with what modifications, from what it arises, and who the knower is with what powers — hear all this from Me in brief.
This has been sung by the sages in many ways, in various distinct Vedic hymns, and in the reasoned and conclusive aphorisms of the Brahma-sutra.
The five great elements, the ego, the intellect, the unmanifest, the ten senses and the one (mind), and the five objects of the senses; desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, the bodily aggregate, consciousness and firmness — this, in brief, is the field with its modifications.
Absence of pride and pretension, non-violence, patience, uprightness, service of the teacher, purity, steadiness, self-control; dispassion toward sense-objects and absence of ego, and constant reflection on the pain and evil of birth, death, old age and disease; non-attachment and absence of clinging to son, wife, home and the like, and even-mindedness amid the wished-for and the unwished-for; unswerving devotion to Me through undivided yoga, resort to solitary places and distaste for crowds; constancy in self-knowledge and insight into the goal of true knowledge — all this is declared to be knowledge; whatever is contrary to it is ignorance.
I shall now declare that which is to be known, knowing which one attains immortality — the beginningless supreme Brahman, said to be neither existent nor non-existent.
With hands and feet everywhere, eyes, heads and faces everywhere, and ears on every side, That exists, pervading all in the world.
Shining through the functions of all the senses, yet without any senses; unattached, yet sustaining all; free from the gunas, yet experiencing them.
It is within and without all beings; unmoving yet moving; too subtle to be known; far away and yet near.
Undivided, yet appearing as if divided among beings; That, the object of knowledge, is the sustainer, the devourer and the creator of all.
The light of all lights, beyond darkness; knowledge, the object of knowledge, and attainable by knowledge — seated in the hearts of all.
Thus the field, knowledge and the object of knowledge have been briefly told; My devotee, understanding this, becomes fit for My being.
Know that both nature (prakriti) and spirit (purusha) are beginningless; and know that all modifications and the gunas arise from nature.
Nature is said to be the cause of the production of body and senses, while the spirit is said to be the cause of the experience of pleasure and pain.
Seated in nature, the spirit experiences the gunas born of nature; attachment to the gunas is the cause of its birth in good and evil wombs.
The supreme Spirit in this body is also called the witness, the approver, the sustainer, the experiencer, the great Lord and the Supreme Self.
One who thus knows the spirit and nature together with its gunas — however he lives, he is not born again.
Some perceive the Self in the heart by meditation, others by the yoga of knowledge, and still others by the yoga of action.
Others, not knowing this, worship as they have heard from others; they too cross beyond death, devoted to what they have heard.
Whatever being is born, moving or unmoving, know it to arise from the union of the field and the knower of the field, O best of the Bharatas.
One who sees the supreme Lord abiding equally in all beings, imperishable amid the perishing — he truly sees.
Seeing the Lord equally present everywhere, he does not destroy the Self by the self, and so reaches the supreme goal.
One who sees that all actions are done by nature alone, and that the Self is not the doer — he truly sees.
When one sees the diverse states of beings as resting in the One, and their expansion from That alone, then one attains Brahman.
Being beginningless and free from the gunas, this imperishable Supreme Self, though dwelling in the body, neither acts nor is tainted, O son of Kunti.
As the all-pervading space, being subtle, is never tainted, so the Self, seated everywhere in the body, is not tainted.
As the one sun illumines this whole world, so the knower of the field illumines the entire field, O Bharata.
Those who, with the eye of knowledge, perceive the distinction between the field and its knower, and the liberation of beings from nature — they attain the Supreme.
