|| श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता ||
The fourteenth chapter, 'Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga', gives a subtle analysis of nature's three gunas — sattva, rajas and tamas. Krishna explains that these three bind the imperishable soul to the body: sattva through happiness and knowledge, rajas through action and greed, tamas through heedlessness and sloth. Whichever guna is dominant at death determines one's next state — the sattvic rise, the rajasic stay in the middle, the tamasic sink low. Arjuna asks what one who has transcended the gunas (the 'gunatita') is like; Krishna gives a beautiful portrait — even in pleasure and pain, honour and dishonour, friend and foe, abiding as the witness. Finally he declares that undivided devotion is the simple means to cross beyond the gunas.
