|| श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता ||
The fifteenth chapter, 'Purushottama Yoga', is short but profound. Krishna opens with the image of the world as an inverted peepal tree — its roots above (in God) and branches spreading below — and says this tree of delusion must be cut with the 'axe of detachment' to seek the supreme abode. He then reveals that the individual soul is an eternal portion of Himself, and that He is the light in sun, moon and fire, the sustainer of all beings, the digestive fire that processes food, and the indweller in every heart. The summit of the chapter is the teaching of the 'Purushottama' — the Supreme Person beyond both the perishable (matter) and the imperishable (soul); one who knows this worships the Lord with his whole being, fulfilled and wise.

The Blessed Lord said: They speak of an eternal peepal tree with roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns; one who knows it knows the Vedas.
Its branches spread below and above, nourished by the gunas; its buds are the sense-objects; and below, its roots stretch forth, binding through action in the world of men.
Its form is not perceived here as such — it has no end, no beginning, no firm foundation. Having cut this deep-rooted tree with the strong axe of detachment, one should then seek that goal, going where one does not return again, taking refuge in that primal Person from whom the ancient creation has streamed forth.
Free from pride and delusion, having conquered the evil of attachment, ever dwelling in the Self, with desires stilled and freed from the dualities of pleasure and pain — the undeluded reach that imperishable goal.
Neither sun nor moon nor fire illumines that supreme abode, reaching which none return — that is My supreme dwelling.
An eternal portion of My own Self becomes the living soul in the world of life, drawing to itself the six senses, including the mind, that abide in nature.
As the wind carries fragrance from its source, so the Lord of the body, leaving one body, takes the senses and mind and moves on to another.
Presiding over the ear, the eye, touch, taste and smell, and over the mind, it experiences the objects of the senses.
The deluded do not perceive it departing, dwelling or experiencing, united with the gunas; only those with the eye of knowledge behold it.
Striving yogis behold it seated in themselves; but the unrefined, of unpurified mind, do not see it, even though they strive.
The light that resides in the sun and illumines the whole world, and that which is in the moon and in fire — know that light to be Mine.
Entering the earth, I support all beings by My power; and becoming the watery moon, I nourish all plants.
Becoming the digestive fire in the bodies of living beings, joined with the in-breath and out-breath, I digest the four kinds of food.
I am seated in the hearts of all; from Me come memory, knowledge and their loss; I alone am to be known through all the Vedas; I am the author of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas.
There are two beings in the world — the perishable and the imperishable; all creatures are the perishable, and the unchanging is called the imperishable.
But there is another, the Supreme Person, called the Highest Self — the imperishable Lord who, entering the three worlds, sustains them all.
Because I transcend the perishable and am higher even than the imperishable, I am celebrated in the world and in the Vedas as the Supreme Person (Purushottama).
One who, undeluded, knows Me thus as the Supreme Person — he, knowing all, worships Me with his whole being, O Bharata.
Thus, O sinless one, this most secret teaching has been declared by Me; knowing this, O Bharata, one becomes wise and fulfilled in all his duties.
