गीता का सोलहवाँ अध्याय 'दैवासुरसम्पद्विभागयोग' मनुष्य के दो स्वभावों — दैवी और आसुरी — का स्पष्ट चित्र खींचता है। पहले श्रीकृष्ण दैवी सम्पदा के छब्बीस गुण गिनाते हैं — निर्भयता, शुद्धि, अहिंसा, सत्य, क्षमा, दया, विनम्रता आदि — जो मुक्ति की ओर ले जाते हैं। फिर आसुरी स्वभाव का वर्णन — दम्भ, घमण्ड, क्रोध, कठोरता, अज्ञान — जो बन्धन की ओर। वे आसुरी मनोवृत्ति का जीवन्त चित्रण करते हैं: 'मैं ईश्वर हूँ, भोगी हूँ, मेरे समान कौन?', अन्यायपूर्ण धन-संग्रह, अहंकार और भोग-लालसा। अन्त में भगवान का प्रसिद्ध उपदेश आता है — 'काम, क्रोध और लोभ — ये तीन नरक के द्वार हैं, इन्हें त्याग दो'; और कर्तव्य-निर्णय में शास्त्र को ही प्रमाण मानने को कहते हैं।
The sixteenth chapter, 'Daivasura-Sampad-Vibhaga Yoga', paints a clear picture of two human natures — the divine and the demonic. Krishna first lists the twenty-six qualities of the divine nature — fearlessness, purity, non-violence, truth, forgiveness, compassion, humility and more — which lead to liberation. He then describes the demonic nature — hypocrisy, arrogance, anger, harshness, ignorance — which leads to bondage. He vividly portrays the demonic mindset: 'I am the lord, the enjoyer, who is equal to me?', the unjust hoarding of wealth, ego and craving. Finally comes the famous teaching — 'desire, anger and greed are the three gates of hell; abandon them' — and the counsel to take scripture as one's authority in deciding right action.

श्री भगवान बोले: निर्भयता, अन्तःकरण की पूर्ण शुद्धि, ज्ञानयोग में दृढ़ स्थिति, दान, इन्द्रिय-दमन, यज्ञ, स्वाध्याय, तप और सरलता; अहिंसा, सत्य, अक्रोध, त्याग, शान्ति, चुगली न करना, प्राणियों पर दया, लोभहीनता, कोमलता, लज्जा और चपलता का अभाव; तेज, क्षमा, धैर्य, शुद्धि, द्रोह न करना और अति-मान का अभाव — हे भारत! ये सब दैवी सम्पदा लेकर जन्मे पुरुष के लक्षण हैं।
The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in the yoga of knowledge, charity, self-restraint, sacrifice, study of scripture, austerity and uprightness; non-violence, truth, freedom from anger, renunciation, peace, absence of slander, compassion to all beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty and absence of fickleness; vigour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, freedom from malice and from excessive pride — these, O Bharata, are the marks of one born with the divine nature.
हे पार्थ! दम्भ, घमण्ड, अभिमान, क्रोध, कठोरता और अज्ञान — ये आसुरी सम्पदा लेकर जन्मे पुरुष के लक्षण हैं।
Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness and ignorance — these, O Partha, are the marks of one born with the demonic nature.
दैवी सम्पदा मुक्ति के लिए और आसुरी सम्पदा बन्धन के लिए मानी गयी है; हे पाण्डव! शोक मत कर, क्योंकि तू दैवी सम्पदा लेकर जन्मा है।
The divine nature leads to liberation, the demonic to bondage; grieve not, O Pandava, for you are born with the divine nature.
हे पार्थ! इस लोक में प्राणियों की सृष्टि दो ही प्रकार की है — दैवी और आसुरी; दैवी का वर्णन विस्तार से हो चुका, अब आसुरी को मुझसे सुन।
There are two orders of created beings in this world, O Partha — the divine and the demonic; the divine has been described at length, now hear from Me of the demonic.
आसुरी स्वभाव वाले न प्रवृत्ति (क्या करना चाहिए) जानते हैं, न निवृत्ति (क्या नहीं); उनमें न शुद्धि होती है, न सदाचार, न सत्य।
The demonic know neither right action nor abstention from wrong; in them there is neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truth.
वे कहते हैं — यह जगत असत्य, आधारहीन और बिना ईश्वर के है; यह केवल स्त्री-पुरुष के संयोग से उत्पन्न है, और काम (वासना) ही इसका कारण है — इसके सिवा और क्या?
They say the world is unreal, without foundation, without a God; brought about by mere union of the sexes, caused by nothing but lust.
इस मिथ्या दृष्टि को पकड़े हुए, नष्ट-स्वभाव और अल्प-बुद्धि वाले ये क्रूरकर्मी लोग जगत के अहित और विनाश के लिए ही प्रकट होते हैं।
Holding to this view, these lost souls of small intellect, of fierce deeds, rise up as enemies of the world for its destruction.
दम्भ, मान और मद से भरे, कभी पूरी न होने वाली कामनाओं के वश, अज्ञान से मिथ्या सिद्धान्त पकड़े हुए, ये भ्रष्ट-आचरण वाले संसार में विचरते हैं।
Filled with insatiable desire, full of hypocrisy, pride and arrogance, holding false views through delusion, they act with impure resolves.
मृत्यु-पर्यन्त रहने वाली असंख्य चिन्ताओं में डूबे, विषय-भोग को ही परम मानने वाले, 'बस इतना ही है' मानने वाले; आशा की सैकड़ों फाँसियों में बँधे, काम-क्रोध के परायण होकर, भोगों के लिए अन्यायपूर्वक धन जमा करने की चेष्टा करते हैं।
Beset by countless cares ending only with death, regarding the gratification of desire as the highest aim, convinced that this is all; bound by a hundred snares of hope, given over to lust and anger, they strive to amass wealth unjustly for the enjoyment of desires.
वे सोचते हैं — 'आज मैंने यह पा लिया, अब इस मनोरथ को भी पा लूँगा; यह धन मेरे पास है और वह भी हो जाएगा। वह शत्रु मैंने मार डाला, और बाकियों को भी मार दूँगा। मैं ईश्वर हूँ, भोगी हूँ, सिद्ध हूँ, बलवान और सुखी हूँ। मैं धनी और बड़े कुल वाला हूँ — मेरे समान कौन है? मैं यज्ञ करूँगा, दान दूँगा, मौज करूँगा।' इस प्रकार अज्ञान से मोहित, अनेक भ्रमों में भटके, मोह-जाल में फँसे और भोगों में आसक्त वे लोग अपवित्र नरक में गिरते हैं।
'This I have gained today, and that desire too I shall attain; this wealth is mine, and more shall be mine. That enemy I have slain, and others too I shall slay. I am the lord, the enjoyer, successful, strong and happy; I am rich and high-born — who is equal to me? I shall sacrifice, I shall give, I shall rejoice.' Thus deluded by ignorance, bewildered by many fancies, entangled in the net of delusion and addicted to the enjoyment of desires, they fall into a foul hell.
अपने को ही श्रेष्ठ मानने वाले, हठी, धन और मान के मद से भरे ये लोग केवल नाममात्र के यज्ञ दिखावे के लिए, बिना शास्त्र-विधि के करते हैं।
Self-conceited, stubborn, filled with the pride and intoxication of wealth, they perform sacrifices only in name, for show, without observing the proper rites.
अहंकार, बल, घमण्ड, काम और क्रोध के वश, दूसरों की निन्दा करने वाले ये लोग अपने और दूसरों के शरीर में स्थित मुझ अन्तर्यामी से द्वेष करते हैं।
Given over to egoism, power, arrogance, lust and anger, these spiteful people hate Me, dwelling within their own and others' bodies.
इन द्वेषी, क्रूर और पापी नराधमों को मैं संसार में बार-बार आसुरी योनियों में ही डालता हूँ।
These cruel haters, worst of men, I hurl again and again into demonic wombs in the cycles of rebirth.
हे कौन्तेय! आसुरी योनि में पड़े वे मूढ़ जन्म-जन्म में मुझे न पाकर और भी अधम गति (घोर नरक) को प्राप्त होते हैं।
Cast into demonic wombs birth after birth, these deluded ones, never attaining Me, O son of Kunti, sink to the lowest state.
काम, क्रोध और लोभ — ये तीन नरक के द्वार हैं, जो आत्मा का नाश करते हैं; इसलिए इन तीनों को त्याग देना चाहिए।
Desire, anger and greed — these are the three gates of hell, destructive of the self; therefore one should abandon these three.
हे कौन्तेय! इन तीनों नरक-द्वारों से मुक्त पुरुष अपना कल्याण साधता है और परम गति को प्राप्त होता है।
One freed from these three gates of darkness, O son of Kunti, works for his own good and attains the supreme goal.
जो शास्त्र-विधि छोड़कर मनमाने आचरण करता है, वह न सिद्धि पाता है, न सुख, न परम गति।
One who casts aside the rules of scripture and acts on the impulse of desire attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.
इसलिए कर्तव्य-अकर्तव्य के निर्णय में शास्त्र ही तेरे लिए प्रमाण है; शास्त्र-विधि से नियत कर्म को जानकर ही तुझे करना चाहिए।
Therefore let scripture be your authority in deciding what should and should not be done; knowing the rules ordained by scripture, you should perform your work here.
