|| श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता ||
The second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, "Sankhya Yoga", is regarded as the essence of the whole Gita. To the grief-stricken Arjuna, Krishna first imparts the knowledge of the immortality of the soul — the soul is never born and never dies; only the body changes, as one discards old clothes for new. He then shows that, as a kshatriya, fighting a righteous war is Arjuna's duty, and gives the famous teaching of Karma Yoga — 'You have a right to action alone, never to its fruits.' The chapter ends with the marks of the sthitaprajna — one who, rising above pleasure and pain, attachment and aversion, rests content in the Self and attains supreme peace.

Sanjaya said: To him thus overcome with pity, his eyes filled with tears and distressed, grief-stricken, Madhusudana (Krishna) spoke these words.
The Blessed Lord said: O Arjuna, whence has this dejection come upon you at this critical hour? It is unworthy of noble men and leads neither to heaven nor to glory. Yield not to unmanliness, O Partha; it does not become you. Cast off this petty faint-heartedness and arise, O scorcher of foes.
Arjuna said: O Madhusudana, how shall I fight with arrows against Bhishma and Drona, who are worthy of my worship, O slayer of foes?
It would be better to live on alms than to slay these noble elders; for by killing them I would enjoy only pleasures and wealth stained with their blood.
Nor do we know which is better — to conquer them or be conquered. The very sons of Dhritarashtra, after slaying whom we would not wish to live, stand arrayed against us.
My nature overpowered by faint-heartedness, my mind confused about duty, I ask You: tell me decisively what is best. I am Your disciple; instruct me, who have taken refuge in You.
I do not see what could dispel this grief that withers my senses, even if I were to gain unrivalled dominion over the earth and even lordship over the gods.
Sanjaya said: O Parantapa, having spoken thus to Hrishikesha, Gudakesha (Arjuna) said to Govinda, 'I shall not fight,' and fell silent.
O Bharata, to him grieving between the two armies, Hrishikesha, as if smiling, spoke these words.
The Blessed Lord said: You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.
Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor these kings; nor shall any of us ever cease to be hereafter.
Just as the embodied soul passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so does it pass into another body; the wise are not deluded by this.
O son of Kunti, the contacts of the senses give rise to cold and heat, pleasure and pain; they come and go and are impermanent. Endure them bravely, O Bharata.
O best of men, the wise one whom these contacts do not afflict, steady in pleasure and pain alike, becomes fit for immortality.
The unreal has no existence, and the real never ceases to be; the truth of both has been perceived by the seers of reality.
Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. None can destroy this imperishable Reality.
These bodies of the eternal, indestructible, immeasurable soul are said to have an end. Therefore fight, O Bharata.
He who thinks the soul a slayer, and he who thinks it slain — both fail to understand; the soul neither slays nor is slain.
The soul is never born, nor does it die; nor having been, does it cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.
O Partha, how can one who knows the soul to be indestructible, eternal, unborn and imperishable slay anyone or cause anyone to be slain?
As a person casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so the embodied soul casts off worn-out bodies and enters new ones.
Weapons cannot cut the soul, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, and wind cannot dry it.
This soul is uncleavable, incombustible, neither wettable nor dryable; eternal, all-pervading, stable, immovable and everlasting.
This soul is said to be unmanifest, inconceivable and unchanging. Knowing it thus, you ought not to grieve.
Even if you think the soul to be constantly born and dying, even then, O mighty-armed one, you should not grieve thus.
For death is certain for the born and birth is certain for the dead. Therefore you should not grieve over the unavoidable.
All beings are unmanifest before birth and unmanifest after death; manifest only in between, O Bharata. What occasion is there for grief?
One sees the soul as a wonder, another speaks of it as a wonder, another hears of it as a wonder; yet even after hearing, none truly knows it.
The soul in the body of every being is ever indestructible, O Bharata. Therefore you should not grieve for any creature.
Considering your own duty too, you should not waver; there is nothing better for a warrior than a righteous war.
Happy are the warriors, O Partha, who obtain such a war, come of itself as an open gateway to heaven.
But if you will not wage this righteous war, then, forsaking duty and honour, you will incur sin.
People will recount your lasting disgrace; and for the honoured, dishonour is worse than death.
The great warriors will think you withdrew from battle out of fear; those who esteemed you will hold you cheap.
Your enemies will speak many unspeakable words, decrying your prowess. What could be more painful?
Either slain you will attain heaven, or victorious you will enjoy the earth. Therefore arise, O son of Kunti, resolved to fight.
Treating pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat alike, engage in battle. Thus you will incur no sin.
This wisdom has been told in terms of Sankhya; now hear it in terms of Yoga (action). Endowed with it, O Partha, you will cast off the bondage of karma.
In this path no effort is lost and no harm results; even a little of this dharma protects from great fear.
In this path, O joy of the Kurus, the resolute intellect is one-pointed; but the intellects of the irresolute are many-branched and endless.
O Partha, the unwise, delighting in the flowery words of the Vedas, full of desires and intent on heaven, utter ornate speech promising rebirth as the fruit of action and prescribing many rites for pleasure and power. In those attached to enjoyment, whose discernment is stolen by such words, the resolute intellect fixed in samadhi does not arise.
The Vedas deal with the three gunas; rise above them, O Arjuna. Be free from the pairs of opposites, ever established in purity, free from anxiety for gain and preservation, established in the Self.
To the knower of Brahman, all the Vedas are of as much use as a small well when there is a flood of water everywhere.
You have a right to action alone, never to its fruits. Let not the fruit of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.
Established in yoga, O Dhananjaya, perform actions abandoning attachment, even-minded in success and failure. This evenness of mind is called yoga.
Action is far inferior to the yoga of wisdom, O Dhananjaya. Seek refuge in wisdom; wretched are those who act for results.
Endowed with wisdom, one casts off both good and evil here itself. Therefore devote yourself to yoga; yoga is skill in action.
The wise, renouncing the fruits of action and freed from the bondage of birth, reach the state beyond all suffering.
When your intellect crosses beyond the mire of delusion, you will become indifferent to all that has been heard and is yet to be heard.
When your intellect, bewildered by what you have heard, stands firm and steady in the Self, then you will attain yoga.
Arjuna said: O Keshava, what is the description of one of steady wisdom, established in samadhi? How does such a one speak, sit and walk?
The Blessed Lord said: When one casts off all desires of the mind, O Partha, and is satisfied in the Self by the Self alone, then is one called a person of steady wisdom.
One unshaken in sorrow, free from longing for pleasures, from whom attachment, fear and anger have departed — such a sage is of steady wisdom.
One unattached everywhere, who neither rejoices on good nor hates the bad — such a one's wisdom is firmly fixed.
When, like a tortoise drawing in its limbs, one withdraws the senses from their objects, then one's wisdom is firmly established.
The objects turn away from one who abstains, but the taste remains; even this taste turns away when the Supreme is seen.
The turbulent senses, O son of Kunti, forcibly carry away the mind even of a wise person striving for perfection.
Restraining all the senses, one should sit steadfast, intent on Me; for one whose senses are mastered is of steady wisdom.
Brooding on sense-objects breeds attachment; from attachment springs desire, and from desire arises anger.
From anger comes delusion; from delusion, confused memory; from confused memory, the loss of reason; and from loss of reason, one perishes.
But the self-controlled one, moving among objects with senses free from attachment and aversion, attains tranquillity.
In that tranquillity all sorrows are destroyed; the intellect of the tranquil-minded soon becomes firmly established.
There is no wisdom for the unsteady, no meditation for the unwise; without meditation no peace, and for the peaceless, how can there be happiness?
As wind carries away a boat on the water, so even one wandering sense, to which the mind yields, carries away one's wisdom.
Therefore, O mighty-armed one, the wisdom of him whose senses are wholly restrained from their objects is firmly established.
What is night for all beings is waking for the self-controlled; and what is waking for all beings is night for the seeing sage.
As waters enter the ever-full, unmoved ocean, so the one whom all desires enter attains peace — not the one who craves desires.
That person attains peace who, abandoning all desires, moves about free from longing, without 'mine' and without egoism.
This is the state of one established in Brahman, O Partha; attaining it, one is not deluded. Fixed in it even at death, one attains oneness with Brahman.
